Aachen, West Germany

There seems to be no use of this old, rundown slaughterhouse in Liebigstraße/Metzgerstraße in Aachen-Rothe Erde which is, to my surprise, open to enter.

This is only one of many rundown industrial heritages in Aachen-Rothe Erde, one of Aachen's large industrial estates in the north-east of the city centre. However, the area I discovered today underlies a noticeable change although I still witnessed plenty of empty and rundown buildings. For example, a car seller has already renovated one of those old buildings:

Behind the windows you can see the old brickstone walls of the former building. I couldn't manage to find out for sure but I think that there are offices inside. In this picture you can also notice that the infrastructure has developped so that the area is better accessible.

Why I actually rode to this area is the weekly (every Saturday, go on: www.melan.de) indoor flea market in an old factory building, called Markthalle. I was astonished by the look and the atmosphere of the factory building's inside.

And the inside:

Neat and lovely decorated stalls:

TUCHFABRIK AACHEN A.G. in Sopienstraße, Frankenberger Viertel:

On the north-west hillside of the Lousberg in the north of Aachen I found a good place to relax...

A nice bar in Aachen-Jakobsviertel, Krakaustraße. It is called Last Exit (go on: www.mylastexit.de).

Following Krakaustraße towards Boxgraben you find Südstraße in which two special bars/clubs are situated.

The bar is called Kopfsuelz and is very unique: Only open once a month (usually Fridays in the middle of each month/the event is called FreitagsFrisch) you immerse into a mainly untouched former butcher's shop with its white tiles on the walls, its meat counter, its meat hooks and its former cold chamber turned into a cosy little sitting area. The other two rooms, the big front room and the kitchen in the back are also decorated with antique furniture. Polish beer, Astra from Hamburg or home-made soups are sold from the meat counter.

The other bar/club is called Hotel Europa (former Parkside) and is located in opposite of Kopfsuelz in Südstraße. Everything (lamps, wall paper, furniture) in there reminds you of the olden days. In the basement there is a small and dark dancefloor next to the second bar of the venue.

Raststätte, Lothringerstraße:

This street (Adalbertsberg) in central Aachen reminds me somehow of Camden Market in London.

Another former manufacturing plant in one of the plenty backyards in Frankenberger Viertel that is about to change into an office building:

Beautifully renovated house in Aachen-Ostviertel, Rehmplatz whose facades remind me of Cracow, Poland.
And again, on the left in the background you can spot another red brickstone chimney of an empty manufacturing plant which looks like this closed-up:
